Singles ministries. If we’re honest, we have a love/hate relationship with them. We love them because they’re our community and they give us an opportunity to serve and grow within the Body of Christ.
But we also kinda get annoyed with them. Because, well, because they can be quirky and frustrating and a reminder that some churches just don’t know what to do with us. Good thing we know how to laugh about it. It really is the best medicine, after all. Maybe you can relate to some of these?
When the guy who’s no longer a “young” adult keeps showing up to the young professionals class:
When your singles minister leaves and the church appoints the senior adult minister to lead the singles ministry, too:
When the singles ministry is assigned a new Sunday School room for the fifth time this year and it’s not even summer yet:
Every guy when the new, cute girl shows up:
…and after his smooth opening line, she drops a not-so-subtle hint that she has a boyfriend:
When the married guy wanders over into the singles crowd in the church lobby and starts handing out relationship advice:
When the girl who plans the ministry’s After Church Lunch Calendar finds out you and a few friends broke away from the singles group and went to lunch somewhere else:
What the other men are thinking when That Guy brings his guitar every week to play “Wonderwall” for the girls:
When the one girl asks the group every week to pray for her sister’s cousin’s uncle’s mother’s coworker’s dog:
When you try to nonchalantly greet a new visitor and invite her to your table before the overeager Singles Ministry Outreach Chairman can get to her:
When you get stuck in the corner for 30 minutes listening to the guy whose go-to conversation topic is how much he hates his job:
When that one girl in the singles group gets engaged and can’t stop talking about her premarital counseling discussions about sex:
When your singles leader organizes an event to see Heaven is for Real for the second time in a month because that’s the only PG movie at the theater:
When you finally find a group of friends in the singles ministry that you love:
When one of them gets transferred, one gets engaged, and one feels led to another church—all in the same week:
[Editor’s Note: Special thanks to W. Brandon Howard for helping out with this list. We’ve missed his humor around these parts.]
