[Editor’s Note: From what we can tell, it appears that How About We is no longer operating. If anything changes, we’ll update this review. If you’re looking for an online dating site, check out our recommendations for the Best Christian Dating Sites.]
Our How About We Review Bottom Line:
- GOOD: It’s a different online dating concept.
- BAD: It’s more date-centered than relationship-centered.
- TAKEAWAY: If you’re more date-focused than relationship-focused, it’s a fun way to find dates. But if you’re looking for marriage, stick with eharmony.
There’s just something about the idea of posting a date idea in the form of “How about we…” that we totally dig. It’s fun and different, and in the realm of online dating where everything seems to be more of the same—give or take a few nuances—it’s a breath of fresh air.
How About We is relatively new to the online dating scene. Not only is it unique in its approach of allowing members to post date ideas in order to attract other interested parties, but it also has another element to the site for couples where they offer date ideas and packages. At this time, the couples element is only offered in New York City and San Francisco, but that’s not what we’re reviewing anyway.
So yeah, initially, we think How About We has potential.
How About We Review :: The Basics
We really liked the site’s aesthetic. It is clean, modern and user-friendly, even though it requires a little bit to look around and figure out how it all works.
You create your own profile, just like you would on any other dating site (religious preference, education level, smoking and drinking preferences, about me, etc.). How About We allows you to list how important your faith is to you, something that we think is important when considering the Best Christian Dating Sites. They don’t allow you to search for profiles of Christians with a similar level of commitment to their faith, but you are allowed to search for “Christian” profiles.
Once you’ve finished your profile and added a few photos (even ones from Facebook, if you want to access it through How About We), then you pitch a date idea and wait for the offers to come rolling in.
Again, we like the way How About We works.
When it comes to cost, we certainly can’t complain about the price of How About We either.
If you pay for a year up front, then you’re only looking at $8/month. But even if you only try it out for one month, that’s still around the price of a dinner date. We’re pretty sure that’s a reasonable amount to pay to meet more like-minded people.
They also have a 100% offline guarantee. The guarantee states that if they don’t have you offline in real dates, then they’ll refund you 100%. Not a bad risk, if you ask us.
How About We :: Upon Further Reflection
After searching through profile after profile, we get the feeling that How About We is more of a fun tool to find dates than it is long-lasting relationships. We’re not saying it’s impossible to find true love on the site; we’re just saying it’s more date-centered than compatibility-centered. We think this is important to note.
For some of our readers, that’s perfectly fine. Heck, we don’t think Christians date enough either, so we’re not saying this is a bad thing. What we are saying is that if you are not into dating for the learning experience that it is, then you might get annoyed with How About We. Unlike, eharmony, Christian Mingle, or Christian Café, you’re probably less likely to email back and forth for a while to get to know someone and more likely to just message to set up a date and see how things go in person. (How do we know this? We’ve been at this for a while, friend. We know.)
Another drawback we see is people who don’t take it seriously. Some people try to skirt having to pay for membership by using the date pitch box to put their email address or phone number. There are those on the other sites, too; they just seem to stick out a little more obviously on How About We. Additionally, we can’t seem to find a way to block members or stop someone from contacting you. It’s possible you could email How About We for help with that, but we would like to see that option be easier.
Then there are the people who pitch boring dates. It seems to us there’s a balance between being too vanilla in your date ideas, “How about we…go to a movie?” and being too creative, weird, and/or intimate for a first date, “How about we…wear leather pants and go to the art museum in a limo and enjoy the different styles?”). No, we didn’t make that last one up.
A few last things we like about How About We:
1. In your settings, you can choose to only let people who are signed into How About We view my profile. This keeps the random, just-passing-through people from reading more information about you.
2. If you invite up to 3 friends, they can get 15% off each. Of course, we’d like it if they gave you a discount for that referral, too, but at least your friends benefit.
3. There is a mobile app, which can be even more beneficial because they offer a location-based feature (for the truly adventurous) which allows people to find dates near them.
