We’ve all been there: Driving up to the church parking lot, debating whether or not to park in “visitor parking” and thus call further attention to our presence. Turning off the car and gathering all of our courage and determination—as well as a few accountability texts from our friends—and walking toward the worship center. Our eyes shifting to and fro, surveying the scene and looking for friendly faces, all the while hoping we can just slip in quietly and observe this first Sunday without much fanfare.
But there’s no “we” in this process, is there? “We” have all been there, but when it happened, “we” were all alone. Just an “I.” As usual, we have to laugh about it because the only other option is to curl up in a ball in the corner and cry laughter is the best medicine. Maybe you can relate to some of these…
When a friend tells you they’ll go with you to check out a new church…
When, after visiting one church, that same friend tells you you’re on your own in your search…
When doing research on a church’s website, you find out they’re about to begin a 6-week sermon series on marriage…
When you fill out a card asking for more information about small groups for singles and you get no response…
Finding out all the women’s bible studies are scheduled for mornings so young mothers can have childcare…
Reading about the church’s singles ministry that includes people right out of college all the way up to senior citizens…
When you’re sitting by yourself and dreading the meet and greet during the worship service…
When you notice the worship leader isn’t wearing a wedding band…
When that same worship leader references his wife and kids a few minutes later…
While reading the bulletin you see the church has multiple small groups for both single men and women…
When the pastor at the church you’re visiting says they’re having a singles skate night and that the ladies will be allowed in the rink first to get a head start and then the guys will join them and tag the girl they want to marry…
When you glance over in church and spot the young singles sitting together and think they look like a fun group…
And then, at a closer look, you notice 3 girls you’ve been matched with online…
When a little old lady wants to introduce you to the church’s lone single adult…
When the pastor introduces himself to you personally and thanks you for taking a risk and visiting the church all by yourself…
What other church search experiences would you add to the list?
