At first glance, in a Christian Café vs Match.com discussion, the sites feel a bit like apples and oranges. Everything about them feels different. They look different and approach online dating from different places.
But then, the more deeply you dive into their differences, the more you realize they both have a lot of similarities and, despite the aesthetics, they have more in common than originally thought. Well, except in one glaring area.
Thoroughly confused yet? Let us explain…
Christian Café vs Match.com :: Similarities
Control: Both sites allow you full access to their databases. You don’t have to wait for them to email you 5-7 daily matches, like eharmony. You can search by geography, age, non-smokers, and other requirements.
Price: Not everyone approaches online dating the same way. Some want to just get their feet wet, and only purchase one month at a time. They’re not ready to commit to more than one month. If that’s you, both sites run in the $35 range for a single month. They start getting cheaper, though, if you commit to more than one month. Three-month memberships are in the $15-20 range on both, and six-month memberships are in the $11-17 range for both. Match is on the higher end of the range each time. Regardless, though, there’s not a significant difference between the two when it comes to price. There’s a slight difference, of course, but nothing that’ll break the bank.
Christian Café vs Match.com :: Differences
Christian: Christian Café is owned by a Christian company; Match is not. Obviously, with “Christian” in the name, Christian Café markets toward Christians. Essentially, that means when you log into peruse matches, most of them are going to identify themselves as Christians from the start. (There are always exceptions.) Match.com does not specifically market toward Christians, but to all people. So when you log into Match, you’re going to have to filter your matches to find the ones who identify as Christian. It’s good to remember that many Christians have found dates and even marriage using both sites.
Faith Search: You can search by a person’s faith on both sites, but Christian Café gives you far more specific options in finding a like-minded Christian. On Match, you’re only allowed to pull matches who identify themselves as “Christians.” As we’ve discussed numerous times before, the term means different things to different people. The creators of Christian Café, being Christians themselves, seem to understand this conundrum. They allow members to explain what their faith means to them. Users can choose from “It defines who I am,” “Still trying to figure it out,” or even just “I believe in God.” It makes a big difference in determining if you and a match are on the same page spiritually.
Membership Numbers: Match.com is the oldest and largest online dating site. In 2012, they had 1.9 million paid subscribers. That’s not just registered users; that’s paying members. It’s the grandfather of online dating as we know it. They pioneered the industry, so it stands to reason that they’d have more members. We don’t know exact numbers for Christian Café, but when we did male and female searches in our Dallas/Fort Worth radius, we netted a few hundred each. While Christian Café has a lot of positive things going for it, it still can’t compete with the membership numbers that Match has.
Christian Café vs Match.com :: The Bottom Line
We wish we could throw our support behind Christian Café here because we believe in what they’re doing. But, truth be told, they’re newer to the scene than the originator of online dating, Match.com. And because of that, Match’s huge membership numbers mean more options for users. Weeding through the large Match database to find like-minded Christians might take a little more time, but we know Christians have found relationships using Match.com. So we have to declare Match as the better option.
